FAITH & THE PUBLIC SQUARE
Toronto: Faith has an important role to play in the public square of Canadian society. Cognizant of this reality, The Canadian Council of Churches' spring Governing Board Meeting recently engaged three significant public figures at a panel entitled "Faith and the Public Square" on May 23rd, 2007, at Queen of the Apostles Renewal Centre in Mississauga, Ontario. The Honourable, Rev. Bill Blaikie, The Rev. Dr. Walter McLean, and The Rev. Father Bill Ryan, S.J., responded to The Canadian Council of Churches' desire to dialogue about the nature of faith-based involvement in public life, and thus, the importance of developing and practicing ecumenical public theology. Each panellist discussed their understanding of the role Christians should be undertaking in order to participate in the public life of Canada. Drawing from their own experiences, Blaikie, McLean and Ryan also suggested concrete ways in which Christians - whatever the denomination - could more fully engage in the current context.
An audio recording of "Faith & the Public Square" is available on The Canadian Council of Churches' website www.ccc-cce.ca.
