Dear Prime Minister,
In a letter to the Standing Committees on Foreign Affairs & International Trade and National Defence & Veterans' Affairs on 16 January 2002, the General Secretary of The Canadian Council of Churches raised substantial questions regarding the establishment of the Guantanamo prison, including whether the Government of Canada officially objected to this law-avoiding procedure and to the dangerous precedents it sets.
Today a Canadian citizen, Omar Khadr, remains jailed in Guantanamo. Given the recent history of repatriation of other Guantanamo prisoners, and the substantial preparatory work done by organizations in Canada to reintegrate him into Canadian society, when will the Canadian government ask that Omar Khadr be returned?
I look forward to receiving your reply at your earliest convenience.
Please be assured of our continued prayers of the churches for you and your government's work to advance justice and the common good for all.
Sincerely,
|
